Paris Sketchbook   December 31st, 2006

In June of this year I found myself in Paris, France on business and was able to stay an extra five glorious days for exploration and discovery. Here are a few pages from my sketchbook of that trip.

I was by myself which I didn’t mind a bit, and decided to wander each day with no particular plan or agenda. I just followed my nose as they say, and soaked it all in. I ended up not visiting a single site that required a ticket or a wait in line. I didn’t even go into any art museums (except for gift shops, of course!). I did a ton of walking, people watching, a bit of shopping and some fun sketching. Most of my sketching was done from sidewalk cafes with a café au lait or glass of French champagne for moral support. Very refined!

Paris is a visual feast and yes, beautiful. It’s a great place for just looking, a favorite pastime of mine. I got some great ideas from Eric Maisel’s A Writers Paris book which I highly recommend. It is not so much about writing as about setting time aside to pursue creative exploration and how a focused trip can facilitate that process. His ideas aligned very will with my intention for the trip so finding that book was a real bonus.

Earlier in my life the idea of being somewhere significant by myself (let alone Paris!) would have been horrifying. But now it was just what I needed and I had a wonderful time. I do promise to take my husband along next time though!

I made this sketch from my car this morning on Shattuck Avenue in North Berkeley. A storm was coming in, which is now pelting us with rain.

Merry Christmas   December 25th, 2006

I love tulips, and couldn’t pass these up in the grocery today. Merry Christmas, everyone! Or, Merry Whatever-You-Are-Celebrating, as the case may be. I hope you are all enjoying a peaceful and joyous holiday season.

My Handbound Journals   December 21st, 2006

sketchbooks-moleskine

For the past three years I have been keeping my sketchbook journals in pocket-sized Moleskine Daily Planners that I rebind with 90lb hot press watercolor paper. After having tried seemingly every other option I hit upon this formula as being just right for me.

I completed three volumes last year, and am well into my fourth volume for 2006. I am rushing to fill it up so that I can start a fresh book on the first of the year. I also will be needing to bind the next book soon. It’s a ritual of sorts that I have come to look forward too, and having done it so many times it now comes easily.

Champagne Brunch   December 18th, 2006

We were at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco over the weekend and had Champagne Brunch in the beautiful Garden Court. What an amazing room; I could have sketched there for days.

My New “Studio”   December 15th, 2006

I recently set up a small space dedicated to art by blocking off a section of our dining room with screens. My space is 4 X 12 feet, has a bay window with a beautiful green view, and is outfitted to my needs. I have a (very small) desk to work at, some storage for supplies and a big red armchair.

SketchCrawl 12: Berkeley   December 9th, 2006

Today was SketchCrawl 12, a worldwide sketching event.

I did some sketching around Berkeley in between errands. Started at my favorite fountain, decked out for the holidays. Then it started to rain so found a place to hide out in. The drawing did not come easily today, but the point of SketchCrawl is to do it anyway! And so, I did.

Holiday Card 2006   December 5th, 2006

image

I wanted to do a sketch for our holiday cards this year but ran out of time. So instead, I pulled out this photo I took last year of the lights on Fourth Street in Berkeley. I had Photoshop-ed it a bit and I really like the result.

Last week I sent it off to Shutterfly to be made into cards. Wow – they did a fabulous job! The cards came quickly and they look very professional. I had no idea they would do such a high quality printing job. Now I have all kinds of ideas for future projects.

Horizontal Landscapes   December 4th, 2006

This weekend was clear, bright, crisp and cool in the Bay Area: simply gorgeous. On Saturday I went hiking with a friend in the Briones Regional Park, east of Berkeley. On Sunday, we drove with some other folks up to the Bodega area of Sonoma County to tour the Bodega Goat Farm, an organic goat cheese farm. Both areas were stunning this weekend: wide and low and green.

Thanksgiving   November 25th, 2006

sketch-thanksgiving

Lately I’ve been thinking in threes. I’ve got triptychs on the brain. I decorated our sideboard for the holiday with three vignettes, and sketched them in little panels.

I’d like to put three large vertical images above the living room couch too, but haven’t figured out exactly what yet. Something big and bold and bright, for sure. living-room

Fire!   November 19th, 2006

sketch-house-fire

We live in the Berkeley Hills not far from the area of the devastating 1991 Firestorm; fire is a big concern. On September 27th this year we were awoken at 3:00am by the crackling and whooshing of a fire. The fire was huge, embers were raining down on our house and yard, and we prepared to evacuate. Luckily the firemen did come and got the fire under control, no one was hurt, and only one house was destroyed. It was a scary experience, though.

I drew the sketch from memory a few hours later. The next day, I found this photo online; they are amazingly close, I think!
