What a great idea! I like sketching over coffee or when we go to archaeological ruins. Seldom enough time (traveling with non-artists who apparently were not gifted with patience) so I do small sketches and fill a page that way. I'm going to try the grid idea next time to see how it works out.

Really fascinated by the Moleskine idea as well. They aren't easy to find in Israel but I'm on the trail now. Thanks for the detailed instructions -- as a professional technical writer, I doubly appreciated those. :-)

Hi Martha,
Your sketches and ideas are a great source of inspiration and encouragement to me. I have no formal education in art, but I do have an intense passion to sketch.
My recent trip to Newfoundland, Canadian East Coast, had no shortage of opportunities. This island is truly a gem in the north Atlantic: Communities of fishing villages perched on rock cliffs and steeped in a rich culture are sprinkled along the rugged coastline. Your ideas of grids etc came in handy when I wanted to capture so much in a limited time.
Thanks for the blog. I taste, chew and digest every word, every sketch.

Loved those santa Fe grids. Also the daily grid I really really want to experience Santa Fe. But for now, I'll enjoy "your take." I like the idea of drawing the shape first and then finding something that fits the shape, Somehow it makes me really LOOK!I am passionate about sketchbooks...always have been. It's part of creating an interesting life..............

Had to stop by to say how much your on-site sketching has been an inspiration to me, which isn't to say that sketch-crawling is my forte. I probably do my best work hunched over my table, but I admire your work lots. The Santa Fe grid is charming, and makes me want to buy plane tickets!

I've not thought of doing grids like that before - great for all those little things you see which don't quite make a full-on sketch.

I like the title of the book club! :)

Love the sketches of Ashland and Santa Fe! And thanks for the lovely memories. We did have a ton of fun, didn't we? Your sketches seem like a unique form of folk art. I find them delightful and heart warming. Have fun in Austin, Martha!
